UPDATE – Lou Fusz Adjusts Boys Age Groups Ahead of Birth and Calendar Year Shifts

As we move closer to the 2026–27 season, the staff has continued to evaluate our plan for the birth-year to calendar-year transition. Following continued collaboration within the staff, parent feedback, and weekly roster construction meetings, we are implementing a couple key refinements to address the best developmental environment for our overall player pool.

Boys Program Adjustments

While our primary goal remains consistency across all platforms, we have made specific adjustments to the Boys' side to better support the transition between our Juniors and Seniors programs:

  • Juniors Program Shift: The majority of the Juniors program will now move to the Calendar Year alignment. This is a strategic shift to ensure cohesion across the program and to better prepare players for the long-term pathway.
  • MLS NEXT Homegrown (U12–U19): To remain consistent with national competition requirements, the Homegrown program will continue to operate on a Birth Year model.
  • The U12 Bridge: Our top U12 Juniors team will remain in the Birth Year alignment. This team will also carry an expanded roster for the upcoming Fall. This "bridge" is designed to prepare as many players as possible for the transition into the U13 MLS NEXT Homegrown and Academy environments.

Long-Term Implementation

This transition is a marathon, not a sprint. We anticipate that these alignments will continue to “normalize" over the next 15 to 18 months. During this time, our coaching staff will prioritize:

  • Individualized Pathways: Coaches are creating specific plans for "late developers" to ensure they aren't lost in the transition, particularly during the move from U12 to U14.
  • U13 Priority: Due to the multiple variables that occur in the transition from U12-14, we are placing extra emphasis on the U13 environment. The intention is to ensure players with different developmental backgrounds are as comfortable, knowledgeable, and prepared for the continued transition to the Seniors ages around high school.

Defining the "Calendar Year"

A common misconception is that the calendar-year shift aligns players strictly by their school grade that the player is currently in. To clarify: the updated "calendar year" for our seasonal planning will shift from the traditional Jan 1–Dec 31 window to an August 1–July 31 cycle. It is still based on specific dates, that are expected to align better with the majority your son or daughter's graduation year.

Next Steps for Families

Staff evaluations of the player pool are ongoing. This spring, we will hold Birth Year tryouts for the top U12 team (Pre Homegrown 2015) to determine the expanded roster. Families can expect continued communication regarding individual placements, registration, and fall opportunities as we head into the tryout season.
